IMPACT GAMES

What's the Goal?

End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

More than 700 million people still live in extreme poverty and are struggling to fulfil the most basic needs like health, education, and access to water and sanitation, to name a few.

Why Does It Matter?

There are many reasons, but in short, because as human beings, our wellbeing is linked to each other. Growing inequality is detrimental to economic growth and undermines social cohesion, increasing political and social tensions and, in some circumstances, driving instability and conflicts.

Game: Poverty Dribble

by Becca Todd, United Kingdom

Description of the game:

Players work together against a smaller number of defenders to keep possession of several balls (depending on group size and ability. For example could be 10 players with 2 defenders and 6 balls).

The defenders represent “Poverty” and tackle the other team to get their balls (representing their money/possessions).

The other players are trying to keep the balls and avoid poverty.

Players need to communicate and help each other to stay safe and secure and share all the balls.

If one player loses the ball to poverty he/she has to communicate with her team mates and try to keep the other balls away from the defenders.

  • The team representing “Poverty” is standing in the middle of the pitch.

Players must constantly move and communicate and share the balls.

  • Could be played in the hands to make it easier for beginners to keep the ball.

Could be played with one ball per player instead of sharing the balls between players.

  • Players: One group keeping possession of several balls, with a minority of defenders.

Area: As small as 10m x 10m. If there are more players a bigger area works better.

  • Balls for the team keeping possession to pass around and share between them.

    Cones to mark the area.

Coloured bibs for the “Poverty” team.

  • Keep looking up to be aware of the defenders (representing "poverty"), the balls and your team mates.

When you have possession of the ball, shield the ball from defenders by ensuring that your body is between the ball and the defender.

  • Communicate with the other defenders to work as a team to get the balls.

Defend with your body sideways on so that you can react and change direction quickly.

Stay low whilst defending to keep your balance and allow you to change direction quickly.

"Jockey" (means putting pressure on the attackers but not rushing into tackles) to give your other defenders time to come to help you, then you can defend together.

Game: Gold Coin

by Myrna Møller, Denmark

Description of the game:

Divide players into two teams.

First Team: Line up and take turns kicking at the goal. Each goal scored earns one point for the team.

Second Team: Provide the kicking team with balls, ensuring a steady supply.

Time Limit: Each team has three minutes to score as many goals as possible. If a team runs out of balls, they receive a 10-second time extension.

Team Switch: After three minutes, the teams switch roles.

Create Game Situations

Encourage creativity:

Invite players to suggest unique game scenarios and modifications.

Goal-based challenges: Introduce different goals for each team, such as scoring a certain number of goals or completing specific challenges.

Integrating Global Goals:

Goal-based rewards: Implement a system where teams can earn bonus points by stating a Global Goal and how they plan to promote it in their community.

Water break discussions: Use water breaks as opportunities for players to discuss and share their ideas for promoting the Global Goals.

Small-sided games: Encourage players to form smaller teams for easier communication and engagement.

Additional Tips:

Variety is key: Offer a variety of game formats and challenges to keep players engaged.

Flexibility: Be adaptable and willing to adjust the game based on player feedback and preferences.

Community involvement: Encourage players to involve their communities in the game and the Global Goals initiative.
